Welcome to the Air Purification Education Month-in-Review for October 2025.
Some of the topics from last month include: new air purifier launches, replacement filter updates, and interesting studies linking air pollution to serious health issues like obesity, diabetes, and breast cancer.
Let’s take a look at some of the activity that occurred in the air purification industry in October.
AirDoctor Launches the New AirDoctor 4000
AirDoctor came out with a new air purifier called the AirDoctor 4000, a high-airflow unit capable of 4 air changes per hour (ACH) in a 694 sq. ft. room with 8-foot ceilings.
The AirDoctor 4000 utilizes a cylindrical shaped HEPA filter design, which has historically been seen in brands like Airpura, AllerAir, and Austin Air. We have recently seen more air purifier manufacturers utilizing cylindrical shaped HEPA filters, as well. For example, even IQAir for the first time, came out with an air purifier with a cylindrical shaped HEPA filter just a few weeks ago, with the release of their new Atem Earth model.
I currently believe cylindrical shaped filters oftentimes are able to form a tighter internal seal, over traditional perpendicular installed, rectangular and square shaped flat HEPA filters. For example, the filters found in models such as the Coway Airmega 400, AirDoctor 3500, and Winix 5510.
Interestingly, AirDoctor chose to skip the “smart” features in this release — a notable departure from its previous AirDoctor 5500 model. The 4000 includes an air quality sensor but no app control, appealing to customers who prefer simplicity over connectivity. Perhaps smart features will be an added option at a future date.

Airpura Expands with the T400 and T400DLX
Airpura, known for its superior chemical filtration, launched two new compact models last month:
- T400 Tobacco Smoke Air Purifier – 12 lbs. of activated carbon designed for removing cigarette and cigar smoke.

Aeris Replacement Filters Return to the U.S. Market
Aeris air purifier owners: replacement filters are finally available again.
Filter Monster began offering compatible filters for the Aeris 3-in-1 and Aeris Lite units in October 2025. While I don’t think these Chinese made filters are of the same quality as the original Swiss made ones, from back in the day… They do provide an option.
These filters are now available through Filter-Monster.com, Sylvane.com, and Walmart.com, though they haven’t yet appeared on Amazon.

Allergy Buyers Club Shuts Down After 20+ Years
One of the original main ecommerce companies in the indoor air quality niche left us for good in October. Allergy Buyers Club (ABC) — once a $20+ million-dollar-a-year e-commerce leader — has officially closed its doors.
Founded roughly two decades ago, ABC was one of the main players in the online indoor air quality niche for many years. However, after changing ownership about 7 years ago, the company officially ceased operations on October 28, 2025.
So, if you’ve tried emailing them or visiting their site recently, you’re not being ignored or blocked — the business is simply gone. RIP.
New Health Studies on Air Pollution and the Human Body
1. Air Pollution Linked to Obesity and Diabetes
A new international study led by researchers at the University of Zurich and Case Western Reserve University found that chronic PM2.5 exposure may disrupt metabolism and lead to increased fat storage.
In the study, mice exposed to concentrated levels of PM2.5 pollution 6 hours a day, 5 days a week, for six months…. showed impaired blood sugar regulation and higher fat accumulation.
This supports long-held detoxification theories — that our bodies will sometimes gain weight (fat) to help dilute poisons/toxins in the body.
2. Air Pollution and Breast Cancer Risk
A large U.S. meta-study combining data from over 400,000 participants revealed a 3% increase in breast cancer risk for every 10-parts-per-billion rise in nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) — a gas commonly found in traffic smog.
This analysis, drawn from five long-term studies and pollution readings from over 2,600 monitoring sites, provides one of the strongest statistical links yet between air pollution and breast cancer.

3. Wood-Burning Stoves and Lung Function Decline
A third study, led by Dr. Laura Horsfall at the University College London Institute of Health Informatics, found that households using wood-burning stoves experience faster lung function decline over time — even after adjusting for income and housing factors.
“Our study suggests that high levels of particulate matter from stoves damage respiratory tissues, causing inflammation in a similar way to cigarette smoke,” Dr. Horsfall said.
Professor Ane Johannessen of the University of Bergen echoed these findings, warning that even modern eco-design stoves “may not be risk-free.”
As someone who grew up with a wood-burning stove, I can attest: even as a child, I noticed soot discoloration of furniture near the stove — a sign of continuous airborne particulate exposure.
